3 Simple Steps for Trimming Your Christmas Tree

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about decorating for Christmas. Full disclosure — I started putting up holiday decorations on November 1. I just love everything Christmas!!! If you are a “wait until after Thanksgiving” person, then the simple steps below will help you decorate a beautiful Christmas tree. Before we get started, be sure to pick out the perfect tree for your space! I recommend using a pre-lit faux tree, and since it’s been stuffed in a box, definitely go through and fluff up the branches to make sure that there aren’t any obvious open gaps. Let’s get festive!

If you use these tips to decorate your tree this year, post a picture to Instagram or share your process in your stories, and tag me @style.and.grace.interiors! Happy Holidays!

Step 1: Ribbon

Before anything else, I place my ribbon in the tree. I always use wired ribbon, because it holds it shape best. Cut the ribbon into one foot sections, and then tuck it in so it cascades down the tree vertically. I like to use a few different sizes of width for the ribbon to give it more dimension and make it look more layered.

Step 2: Picks & Sticks

Picks & Sticks are my favorite part! I divide them up by style and go around the tree doing my best to evenly spread them out. I save some of the longer ones to use at the top of the tree to spray out like a beautiful tree topper! I use all sorts of shapes and sizes when it comes to pics and sticks. Don’t be afraid to use some that wouldn’t be considered “traditional” Christmas tree decor, like faux floral stems!

Step 3: Ornaments

With my ribbon and picks & sticks done, I fill in the rest of the tree with ornaments. I like to use small, medium, large, and extra-large! I save the extra large ones for any gaps that I was unable to fill with the steps above. I don’t even use an ornament hanger for those—I just push them in to the tree!

Finishing Touches:

At the very end I go through and cut a spiral garland to give the tree more Bounce and movement! I finish it with a beautiful tree skirt, and then I go ahead place some presents under the tree. If you haven’t purchased or wrapped gifts yet, I definitely recommend finding some beautifully decorated gift boxes and tying a bow on them, so you can get that finished look!
