Manor Road Style: Modern Farmhouse Finishes and Furniture

It is hard to believe that it was eight years ago that Joanna Gaines appeared on televisions across the country making everyone fall in love with a modern farmhouse style. The modern farmhouse trend is withstanding the test of time, because so many of its elements are versatile, approachable, and truly timeless. When my client asked me to design a new build for her family in the modern farmhouse style, I was excited to use finishes and furniture to really bring the style to life. Keep reading to learn how I integrated key elements of modern farmhouse style into the living room and kitchen!

Reclaimed Wood: To bring in warmth and nature, I used a piece of reclaimed wood as the mantel over the fireplace. It creates that rustic feel and really sets the tone for the space.

Ceiling Beams: Ceiling beams can be used to elongate a running them parallel to the longest side of the space. Recently, faux beams have become a cost effective option for achieving this look!

Shiplap: To get the modern farmhouse feel, your home does not have to be covered in shiplap. Here, I used shiplap as an accent above the built-in benches to frame the fireplace.

Farmhouse Light Fixtures: The wall sconces on either side of the fireplace are very traditional farmhouse pieces. To make them feel more modern, I paired them with the more glamorous chandelier!

Patterned Furniture: While most furniture in a modern farmhouse style is going to be neutral, adding a bold pattern adds warmth and character to the space. The pattern I chose for the custom arm chairs in this space is a medallion print, but you could also use buffalo check, plaid, or several other options!

Bright Neutrals: In order to achieve the light and airy kitchen that everyone loves, I chose bright neutrals for the cabinets and countertops.

Bold Pops of Color: To add contrast, I went with a bold pop of blue on the island. This helps make the space feel a little more cozy!

Wide Plank Floors: Wide plank floors are a staple in the modern farmhouse style. For this home, I went with a more natural look featuring lots of variation and warmth!

Brick Accents: A little bit of brick goes a long way. If you use too much, the style starts to lean toward industrial, but here, I used brick as the backsplash at the beverage station for the perfect pop!

Wrought Iron: Black metal or wrought iron accents help bring in a little bit of the rustic element. The barstools I chose pair the metal with wood seats to compliment the floor and the beams in the living room.
