Cedar Creek Style: From Studs to Stunning

When Starr Homes asked me to design an entry for the Fall Parade of Homes 2020, I was excited by the opportunity to work on a project that did not have a client attached. It gave me the freedom to make some bold design choices that could have major impact!

It turns out those choices paid off in a huge way. Our entry in the Fall Parade of Homes 2020 was recognized as both a “Distinctive Plan and Design Second Place Award Winner” and a “Pick of the Parade Silver Award Winner.” It was a huge honor to work on this project and be a part of the parade, so you can imagine the gratitude I felt when the response was so positive.

In addition to the recognition during the parade, when I shared a photo of the great room to my Instagram account, it spread like wildfire! Because it was such a huge favorite, I want to give you a glimpse behind the scenes. Click through the gallery below to see how I took this room from the studs to stunning!

Seeing this room in person for the first time, I was immediately struck by the beautiful angles on the back wall. I really wanted to draw attention to the angles and the height of the beautiful vaulted ceiling. I knew I wasn’t going to do built-ins around the fireplace, so my plan was to integrate a design feature with a “wow factor” to replace the weight that built-ins would have brought to the space. The shiplap wall feature, painted in Sherwin Williams Iron Ore, accentuated the beautiful angles and high ceilings while also bringing in some drama. Mixing the dark tones with the lighter finishes helped to bring out some of the natural features in the space like the raw grain in the wood accents or the stone surround on the fireplace.

And that is how we took the Great Room in the Cedar Creek project from the studs to absolutely stunning!
